Rifles for Minnesota deer camps and farm country

The rifle year in Minnesota turns on the firearms deer opener in early November. In the northern forest shots are short and cover is thick, so .30-30 lever guns and handy .308s still fill the camps. In open farm country a flatter cartridge such as 6.5 Creedmoor or .270 makes sense, but only where a rifle is legal: the rules for the former southern shotgun zone changed recently, so check the DNR regulations for the county you hunt. After deer season, .223 and .22-250 rifles come out for coyotes over snow, and a .22 rimfire covers squirrels and practice.
